This week has seen the start of our "Funky Fingers" sessions. Each morning we begin with "Wake up - Shake up" (and some lovely movers we have too!!), followed by our usual Registration and discussion time. We have now introduced a short Funky Fingers time where the children work in group on a variety of motor skills.....
And now for the science bit...... motor skills involve the development of movements both big and small - moving arms/legs, hands/fingers, whole body, co-ordination, etc. and we focussing on posture, balance, co-ordination, proprioception (the sense of the relative position of neighbouring parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement) as well as the arm and finger skills needed for early writing activities.
Each morning the children split into groups for 5-10 minutes to practice their skills through games such as squeezing pegs, using tweezers, large chalk circles, manipulating small items, balancing blocks and a finger workout with 'dough gym' ..... all done to the latest music!!
We hope to add some photo soon so you can see the children in action. It has proven to be a fantastic start to each morning and the children seem to be enjoying this routine, before they move off to their own play based learning and interests.
We'd love to hear if the children have 'reported' back any comments about their day.
