Welcome to our weekly blog with news of the weeks activities, what we've done and why.... and other snippets of news!
And so this week has been a mix of icy, freezing cold and sunny warm weather. We are encouraging the children to think for themselves about whether a coat is necessary and on most mornings it hasn't taken them long to decide that they do! And a hat, and gloves won't be missed either. Staff are, of course 'helping' children decide when it's necessary 😊
Young children can find it difficult to regulate their own body temperature however, it's been shown that even small babies make it clear when they are cold.... yet can't determine overheating. So most children will say "I'm cold" and fetch a coat, yet won't say "I'm hot" and ask for layers to be removed. So this is an important skill to master, especially as children are racing around and don't feel as cold as adults who might be standing nearby observing. ❄️❄️. Clearly adult judgement comes first but we also value children's own judgements about the clothing they need depending on their individual activity level.
Since September, we've been putting a strong focus in handwriting skills and muscle development. Did you know that in order to control a pencil and develop a 'comfortable' grip children need strong shoulder muscles? Elbows and wrists play an important role too.... lots of our activities have been aimed at working the shoulder muscles as well as smaller muscles through then manipulation of objects. And we've noticed some great results. It's a well known fact that boys particularly can take a dislike to writing tasks, this tends to be because it puts such a strain on their muscles and if not a physically enjoyable task... so we work those muscles, making it less physically tiresome and suddenly the whole group are choosing to draw, scribble, chalk, cut, paint.... and lots more! This year we have seen a huge increase in the interest given to mark making and writing activities - and I'd like to think that our planning has played a role in that 📝
So what else? We've been 'junk modelling', exploring challenges on the bikes, turn taking tasks, breaking up ice and looking at the shapes the pieces make, we've been thinking of the summer with ice-cream in the sand, and playing in boxes 📦 (it's very dark in here! Can I have a torch?)
All in all the learning has been amazing, but so have the friendships, the creations, the imaginations and the joy. I think all the team would agree - WE HAVE THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD!!!
